Book Tours & Activities in Pingtung

Pingtung (屏東) is Taiwan’s southernmost county — a warm, tropical land of palm-fringed beaches, coral islands, hot springs, and rich indigenous and Hakka culture. It’s the only county in Taiwan that faces the Pacific Ocean, the Bashi Channel and the Taiwan Strait all at once (official: i-Pingtung). From the beaches of Kenting National Park to snorkeling with sea turtles off Little Liuqiu, here’s everything you need to plan a trip.

Where is Pingtung?
Pingtung stretches down the southern tip of Taiwan, wrapping around the Hengchun Peninsula below Kaohsiung. Kenting sits at the very bottom (see map).

How to get to Pingtung
To Kenting: the fastest way is the THSR high-speed rail to Zuoying (Kaohsiung), then the Kenting Express bus (about 2 hours to Kenting). You can also take a Taiwan Railway train to Pingtung or Chaozhou stations for the north of the county. To Little Liuqiu: take a train or bus to Kaohsiung, transfer to Donggang, then a 15–25 minute ferry to the island. On the ground, a scooter is the classic way to explore Kenting and Little Liuqiu; buses and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle also serve the main sights.
Top things to do in Pingtung
- Kenting National Park: Taiwan’s first national park — golden beaches at Nanwan and Baishawan, the iconic Eluanbi Lighthouse and Taiwan’s southernmost point, coral cliffs, grasslands and forest trails.
- Little Liuqiu (Xiaoliuqiu): a coral island a short ferry from Donggang, famous for snorkeling and diving with green sea turtles, SUP, kayaking and scooter loops past sea-carved rocks.
- Hengchun Old Town: a rare walled town with intact Qing-era gates, night-market snacks and the setting for the film Cape No. 7.
- Maolin & Dapeng Bay: two national scenic areas — Maolin’s Purple Butterfly Valley and gorges, and Dapeng Bay lagoon with a breezy cycling road.
- Sichongxi Hot Springs: clear, gentle sodium-bicarbonate springs near Checheng — a relaxing soak after the beach.
- Sandimen & indigenous culture: a mountain township of Rukai and Paiwan heritage — slate houses, crafts, and tandem paragliding over the valley. Nearby, the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park and Liudui Hakka Cultural Park tell the region’s deep cultural story.
- Beaches & water sports: Kenting is Taiwan’s surf and beach capital — swimming, surfing, diving and boat trips all along the coast.

Eat & shop
Pingtung eats big. Donggang is famous for its bluefin tuna and fresh seafood; Kenting Night Market serves grilled squid, sausages and tropical drinks. The county’s sunny climate makes it a fruit basket — look for wax apples (lotus mist), mangoes and lemons, and it’s even Taiwan’s second-largest rose grower.
Where to stay
Base in Kenting/Nanwan for beaches and nightlife, Hengchun for old-town charm and lower prices, or stay overnight on Little Liuqiu to catch the island at its quiet best. Homestays (minsu) are everywhere and often the most characterful choice.
