Taitung, on Taiwan’s remote southeast coast, is where the island slows down. Hemmed between the Central Mountain Range and the Pacific, this is Taiwan’s least developed and most spacious region – a landscape of rice valleys, hot springs, wild beaches, and offshore islands, with a strong Indigenous culture that sets it apart from the west-coast cities. There are no crowds and no skyscrapers here; the draw is open sky, clean air, and some of the best scenery in the country.

Getting here is half the appeal: the train down the East Rift Valley or along the coast is one of Taiwan’s great rail journeys, and once you arrive, Taitung is a launch pad for hot-air balloons over the valley, paragliding, snorkeling off Green Island, and quiet nights under some of Taiwan’s darkest skies. Give it two days if you can. Here is how I would spend the time.

Cycle the Rice Fields of Brown Boulevard

Just outside the city, near Chishang and Guanshan, the East Rift Valley unrolls into a patchwork of emerald rice paddies framed by mountains on both sides. The famous “Mr. Brown Avenue” – a lone tree-lined lane through the fields made famous by a TV commercial – is the postcard shot, and the whole area is laced with flat cycling paths. Rent a bike, ride between the paddies, and you will understand why people fall for rural Taitung.

Catch the Taitung Hot Air Balloon Festival

Each summer, the skies above Luye Highland fill with color for the Taiwan International Balloon Festival, one of the region’s signature events – dozens of hot-air balloons rising over the rift valley at dawn, with tethered rides and evening “night glow” light shows set to music. Even outside the festival, Luye is a scenic tableland with paragliding launches and wide valley views. Time your visit for the festival if you can; it is spectacular.

Take the Ferry to Green Island

An hour by ferry from Taitung, Green Island (Ludao) is a volcanic speck ringed by coral reefs and clear water – one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in Taiwan. Scooter the coast road in a couple of hours, soak in the rare Zhaori seawater hot spring (one of only a few in the world), and visit the sobering former political prison. It makes a great overnight escape from the mainland coast.

Relax at Zhiben Hot Springs

Tucked in a forested valley south of the city, Zhiben is Taitung’s classic hot-spring resort area, where carbonate-rich waters have drawn bathers for over a century. Soak in a resort pool, walk the shaded trails of the Zhiben Forest Recreation Area with its giant banyans and white waterfall, and slow right down. It is the easiest half-day trip from the city and a lovely way to unwind after cycling.

Walk Seaside Park and the Coastal Bike Path

Right in town, the Taitung Seaside Park spreads along the Pacific with lawns, art installations, and a long coastal bike path that runs up the shoreline. It is the local spot for a sunrise walk, a lazy ride, and the annual land-art festival’s driftwood sculptures. Pair it with the nearby Taitung Forest Park and its mirror-still Flowing Lake for an easy, breezy morning.

Explore Indigenous Culture and the Night Market

Taitung has one of the strongest Indigenous presences in Taiwan, and it shows in the food, crafts, and music. The Tie Hua Music Village hosts live Indigenous performances and a weekend market of local makers, while the Taitung Tourism Night Market serves up aboriginal millet dishes, roasted meats, and local produce. It is the best place to taste the region and hear its living culture after dark.

Taitung’s highlights are spread across valleys, coast, and offshore islands, and public transport is thin, so a guided tour or day trip genuinely helps here – arranging the balloon-festival timing, the Green Island ferry and snorkeling, or a valley cycling route with the logistics handled. Your base depends on whether you want town convenience or valley quiet.

In Taitung City you are close to the train station, the night market, the seaside park, and the Green Island ferry, with a good spread of hotels and guesthouses making it the easiest hub for exploring.

Out in the East Rift Valley around Luye or Chishang trades the town for rice-field views, hot-spring resorts, and homestays right among the scenery – the better choice if the balloons and cycling are your priority.

What to Pack

Taitung is warm, sunny, and outdoorsy, with hot summers and a real typhoon season, so pack light breathable clothes, strong sun protection, and swimwear for the hot springs and Green Island. Taiwan runs on 110V Type A/B outlets, so bring a universal travel adapter to keep your phone and camera charged through long days of cycling and coastal exploring. And because a day out in the rift valley or on Green Island leaves few places to plug in, a slim power bank keeps your maps and camera going from the dawn balloons to the night market.

Getting Around

Taitung is remote by Taiwan standards, which is exactly its charm. The train from Taipei or Kaohsiung is the main way in – a scenic ride down the coast or through the rift valley – and the airport handles domestic flights. Once here, a scooter or rental car is by far the best way to reach the valley, hot springs, and coast, as buses are infrequent; ferries to Green Island leave from Fugang Harbor. Give the region two or three days to enjoy the valley, the coast, and an island escape without rushing.
