Chiayi is southern Taiwan’s gateway city, best known as the jumping-off point for the legendary Alishan mountains – but it deserves more than a quick dash to the train platform. This is a walkable, friendly city with a rich forestry heritage, a beloved baseball history, some of the island’s best chicken-rice, and a growing cluster of art and design spaces built inside its old timber-industry bones. Use it as a base for the mountains, then give the city itself a day; you will be glad you did.
It is straightforward to reach, too – the High Speed Rail stops just outside town and the regular railway runs right into the center, putting Chiayi within easy reach of Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan. Here is how I would spend a visit.

Ride the Alishan Forest Railway
The reason most people come to Chiayi is Alishan, and the classic way up is the century-old narrow-gauge Forest Railway, a marvel of engineering that spirals and switchbacks through bamboo and towering cypress into the high mountains. Up top await the famous sea of clouds, sunrise over Yushan (Jade Mountain), ancient sacred trees, and cool forest trails. Even if you drive or bus up, ride at least a section of the little red train – it is a genuine bucket-list journey. This is best planned as a full day trip or an overnight to catch the dawn.
Stroll the Hinoki Village
Back in the city, Hinoki Village is a beautifully restored cluster of Japanese-era wooden houses built from Alishan cypress to house forestry officials. Today the timber buildings hold cafes, craft shops, and design boutiques, and the whole leafy compound is a lovely, atmospheric place to wander for an hour or two – a direct link to the logging industry that built Chiayi.
Explore the Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park
Train lovers should not miss the Garage Park, an open-air depot beside the main station where the historic locomotives and quirky steam and diesel engines of the Forest Railway are preserved. It is free, low-key, and genuinely charming, telling the story of the line that made the city famous.
Eat Chiayi Turkey Rice
Chiayi’s signature dish is turkey rice – tender shredded turkey over rice drizzled with savory oil and gravy – and locals are passionate about which stall does it best. It is cheap, delicious, and everywhere; make it your first meal in town. Pair it with the city’s other night-market snacks and you have an easy, tasty evening.
Wander the Chiayi Art Museum and Old Town
Housed in a handsome 1930s Art Deco building, the Chiayi Art Museum anchors a walkable old-town district of Japanese-era architecture, indie cafes, and the lively Wenhua Road Night Market. It is an easy, pleasant loop on foot, and a good way to feel the city’s creative, unhurried character before or after a mountain trip.
Relax at Lantan Reservoir
On the eastern edge of town, the Lantan reservoir is Chiayi’s green escape – a scenic lake ringed by walking and cycling paths, pavilions, and tree-shaded trails popular with locals at dawn and dusk. Rent a bike or just stroll a loop; it is a calm, pretty counterpoint to the bustle of the markets.

Alishan is far more rewarding with logistics handled – sunrise timing, train reservations, and the winding mountain roads are a lot to juggle solo. A guided Alishan tour, or a combined trip that adds the tea plantations and sacred trees, takes care of the transport and timing and lets you simply enjoy the mountains. Tainan and its historic sights are also an easy day trip from Chiayi.
Where to Stay in Chiayi
Picking the right base makes both the city and the mountains easy.
Around Chiayi Railway Station and the downtown is the most convenient choice, walking distance to the Forest Railway platform, Hinoki Village, night markets, and turkey-rice stalls.
Up in Alishan itself is worth an overnight if you want to catch the famous sunrise and sea of clouds without a pre-dawn scramble from the city.
What to Pack
Chiayi is warm and humid in the city but genuinely cold and often wet up in Alishan, so pack layers and a light rain jacket even in summer – the temperature difference catches many visitors out. Comfortable shoes are a must for forest trails and old-town wandering. Taiwan runs on 110V Type A/B outlets, so bring a universal travel adapter to keep your devices charged. And since Alishan sunrise trips start before dawn with few places to plug in, a slim power bank keeps your phone and camera alive through the long day in the mountains.
Getting Around
Chiayi is easy to reach and compact – the High Speed Rail station sits just outside town (linked by shuttle and a branch train line), while the conventional railway runs right into the city center from Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan. In the city, buses and cheap taxis cover everything, and the old town is very walkable. For Alishan, buses and the Forest Railway climb from the main station, but a tour or hired car saves a lot of hassle. Give the mountains a full day or overnight, and the city another half to full day.
