Penghu is Taiwan’s island getaway, an archipelago of some 90 islands scattered across the Taiwan Strait between the main island and China. This is a different Taiwan from the neon cities: whitewashed fishing villages, powder-white beaches, basalt sea cliffs, and some of the clearest water in East Asia. In summer it becomes the island nation’s playground for windsurfing, snorkeling, and island-hopping, while its old temples, coral-stone houses, and heart-shaped stone fish traps give it a slow, sun-bleached character all its own. It is the place Taiwanese go to unwind, and it deserves to be far better known abroad.

Getting here is quick: short flights link Magong, the main town, with Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Taichung in under an hour, and ferries run from Chiayi and Kaohsiung in summer (see live fares above). Once you land, scooters, tours, and inter-island boats open up the archipelago. Give it two or three days, and here is how I would spend them.

Explore Old Magong and Tianhou Temple

Start in Magong, Penghu’s laid-back capital, where the past lingers in the narrow lanes. The Tianhou Temple here is the oldest Mazu temple in all of Taiwan, a beautifully weathered wooden structure honoring the sea goddess who watches over fishermen. Wander the atmospheric Central Old Street around it, browse for local specialties like brown-sugar cake and dried seafood, and see the coral-stone and old well that give the district its history. It is a gentle, walkable introduction to island life, and it is free to visit.

Cross the Great Bridge to the Western Isles

The Penghu Great Bridge, one of the longest inter-island bridges in the Far East, links the main island to Baisha and Xiyu, and a scooter ride across it is a rite of passage. Out west you will find the Whale Cave, a natural basalt arch pounded out by the sea, the pretty Daguoye basalt columns, and the historic Xiyu Western Fort. The whole western loop, with its lighthouses and sea views, is one of Penghu’s great half-day drives — and it is free to explore.

See the Twin-Heart Stone Weir on Qimei

Penghu’s most iconic image sits on the far-flung island of Qimei: the Twin-Heart Stone Weir, a centuries-old tidal fish trap built of stacked stones in the shape of two interlocking hearts. Fishermen once used these weirs to catch fish stranded by the falling tide, and this photogenic pair has become the symbol of the archipelago. Reaching Qimei takes a boat or a short flight — the island-hopping tour above bundles the ferry and the visit together — but the romance of that turquoise double heart from the clifftop above is worth the journey.

Hit the Beaches and Snorkel the Reefs

Penghu is, at heart, a beach destination. Aimen and Shanshui beaches offer soft sand and easy swimming, Shili is a long ribbon of white perfect for sunset, and the waters around Jibei Island, a sandbar isle north of the main group, are so clear and shallow they glow. Summer is prime time for snorkeling over coral, banana-boating, and windsurfing, which Penghu’s steady winds make world-class. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and plan your beach day around the tides — the beaches themselves are free, and the round-trip ferry to Jibei runs NT$300–400 (see the table above).

Island-Hop to Jibei and Wangan

Half the joy of Penghu is getting out on the water. Fast boats run in summer to Jibei for its famous golden sandbar and water sports, and to the quieter southern islands of Wangan and Qimei, where green sea turtles nest and old stone villages doze in the heat. Even a single island-hopping day, jumping between beaches and fishing hamlets by boat, captures the archipelago’s easy, sea-bound spirit.

With sights scattered across dozens of islands and boat schedules that shift with the season and tides, a guided tour is the easy way to see the best of Penghu. The choice is between the convenience of town and the quiet of the beach.

In and around Magong, the main town, you will find hotels and guesthouses close to the ferries, restaurants, the old street, and the airport shuttle — the most convenient base for a first visit and for arranging island-hopping trips.

Out near the beaches, seaside guesthouses and resorts toward Shanshui or Jibei put you steps from the sand and the water sports, ideal if you have come mainly to swim, snorkel, and slow right down.

What to Pack

Penghu is a sun-and-sea destination with strong island glare and steady wind, so pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a light windbreaker for boat rides. Taiwan runs on 110V with Type A/B plugs, so bring a universal travel adapter to keep everything charged. And because a full Penghu day runs from an early boat out to the islands to a long beach sunset, a slim power bank keeps your phone and camera alive through all of it.

Getting Around

Getting to Penghu is easy in season — short flights connect Magong with Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Taichung in under an hour, and summer ferries run from Chiayi and Kaohsiung (see live fares above). On the islands, most travelers rent a scooter to explore the main island and the bridge-linked western isles, while inter-island boats and organized tours reach the outer islands like Jibei, Wangan, and Qimei. Give the archipelago two to three days: one for Magong and the western loop, and one or two for the beaches and island-hopping — and go in summer, when the boats run and the water is at its most inviting.
