What KTX is — and Korea’s other trains
KTX launched in 2004 and now runs on several lines: the Gyeongbu Line (Seoul–Daejeon–Dongdaegu–Busan), the Honam Line (Osong–Gwangju–Mokpo), the Gyeonggang Line (Seoul–Gangneung, built for the 2018 Winter Olympics) and the Jeolla Line (Iksan–Jeonju–Yeosu). For slower, cheaper journeys, KORAIL also runs ITX-Saemaeul and Mugunghwa trains that stop at more stations. KTX has two classes: Standard (Economy) Class — comfortable 2+2 seating, plenty for most trips — and First Class, with wider 2+1 seats and more legroom for roughly 40% more. On busy trains you can also buy a cheaper standing/non-reserved ticket and take any open seat or stand in the vestibule. At the station, step by step
Korean stations are refreshingly simple. 1. Check the departure board for your train number and platform. 2. There are usually no ticket gates — walk straight to the platform (staff may spot-check tickets on board, so keep your e-ticket handy). 3. Cars are numbered along the platform; stand near yours. 4. Find your seat by car and seat number on your ticket. Trains are punctual to the minute, so arrive 10–15 minutes early.

- Reserve early for weekends and holidays (Chuseok, Seollal) — KTX sells out fast.
- Stations aren’t always downtown. Busan and Daejeon stations are central; some (like Gwangju-Songjeong) need a short transfer.
