Korea’s KTX (Korea Train eXpress) is one of the easiest, fastest ways to explore the country — trains hit up to 300 km/h and connect Seoul to Busan in about 2 hours 40 minutes. Stations are signed in English, tickets are simple to book online, and this guide (built on official KORAIL information) walks you through routes, 2026 fares, seat classes and exactly how to book and board.

What KTX is — and Korea’s other trains

KTX launched in 2004 and now runs on several lines: the Gyeongbu Line (Seoul–Daejeon–Dongdaegu–Busan), the Honam Line (Osong–Gwangju–Mokpo), the Gyeonggang Line (Seoul–Gangneung, built for the 2018 Winter Olympics) and the Jeolla Line (Iksan–Jeonju–Yeosu). For slower, cheaper journeys, KORAIL also runs ITX-Saemaeul and Mugunghwa trains that stop at more stations. A separate high-speed operator, SRT, runs similar bullet trains from Suseo station in southern Seoul — handy if you’re staying in Gangnam.

KTX fans out from Seoul down the west and to the southeast. The map below shows the main high-speed stations and lines:

Seat classes

KTX has two classes: Standard (Economy) Class — comfortable 2+2 seating, plenty for most trips — and First Class, with wider 2+1 seats and more legroom for roughly 40% more. On busy trains you can also buy a cheaper standing/non-reserved ticket and take any open seat or stand in the vestibule. Children under 6 travel free on your lap; child fares (ages 6–12) are about half.

How to book a KTX ticket

You have several options:

  • KORAIL website (korail.com) or the KORAIL Talk app — the official channels, in English, with a mobile e-ticket (QR).
  • Klook — an easy English booking with instant confirmation (the links above), ideal if you want everything in one travel app.
  • Ticket vending machines & station counters — at any train station (not subway stations).

When can you buy? From 07:00, one month before your travel date, up to 20 minutes before departure online (10 minutes at vending machines; until departure at station counters). Pay by credit card. Popular routes and holiday dates sell out — book ahead.

Is the KORAIL PASS worth it?

The KORAIL PASS is a foreigner-only pass giving unlimited rides on KTX and most KORAIL trains for a set number of days (consecutive or flexible). It pays off if you’re doing several long legs — for example Seoul → Busan → Gyeongju → back — in a short window. For one or two trips, individual tickets are usually cheaper. At the station, step by step

Korean stations are refreshingly simple. 1. Check the departure board for your train number and platform. 2. There are usually no ticket gates — walk straight to the platform (staff may spot-check tickets on board, so keep your e-ticket handy). 3. Cars are numbered along the platform; stand near yours. 4. Find your seat by car and seat number on your ticket. Trains are punctual to the minute, so arrive 10–15 minutes early.

Tips for a smooth trip

  • Reserve early for weekends and holidays (Chuseok, Seollal) — KTX sells out fast.
  • Stations aren’t always downtown. Busan and Daejeon stations are central; some (like Gwangju-Songjeong) need a short transfer.
  • Grab snacks first — most KTX trains don’t have a full food car, though vending machines and station shops are plentiful.
  • Keep your passport if you bought a foreigner fare or KORAIL PASS; you may be asked to show it.
  • Use a T-money card for the subway/bus to and from stations.
