Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and the gateway to Japan’s wild northern island – a young, spacious, grid-planned city that feels a world apart from the dense old streets of Kyoto or Tokyo. Founded only in the 19th century and laid out with wide boulevards, it is famously easy to navigate, ringed by mountains, and blessed with some of the best food in the country. This is the home of miso ramen, fresh Hokkaido seafood, world-class beer, and buttery dairy that shows up in everything from soft-serve to cheese tarts.
It is a four-season destination: powder-snow winters and the famous February Snow Festival, cool green summers that draw crowds escaping the mainland heat, and lavender-and-beer-garden shoulder seasons. Stroll Odori Park and Climb the TV Tower
Odori Park is the green spine running through the center of Sapporo, a long ribbon of lawns, fountains, and flower beds that hosts the city’s biggest festivals – the Snow Festival in winter, beer gardens in summer. What to Pack
Sapporo’s weather swings hard by season – freezing, snowy winters and cool, comfortable summers – so pack layers and check the forecast before you go, with proper insulation and grippy footwear if you are visiting for the snow. Japan runs on 100V Type A/B outlets, so bring a universal travel adapter to keep your phone and camera charged through long days of markets and mountain views. And since you will be out from a morning seafood market to a late night-view on Mt. Moiwa, a slim power bank keeps your maps and photos going all day.
Getting Around
Sapporo is one of Japan’s easiest cities to navigate. Most visitors arrive at New Chitose Airport and ride the JR rapid train into Sapporo Station in about 40 minutes, or take the shinkansen north to Hakodate and connect on. In town, a three-line subway plus streetcars and buses cover everything, and the grid layout with numbered blocks makes walking intuitive.
