Japan packs an extraordinary range of sights into a country roughly the size of California, and picking where to go first can be overwhelming. This ranking pulls together the 100 most-visited and most-recognized attractions across Japan’s major tourist cities: Tokyo, the sprawling capital of shrines, towers and neon crossings; Osaka, Japan’s food and entertainment capital; Kyoto, the former imperial capital packed with temples, shrines and gardens; Hiroshima, home to the Peace Memorial Park and the torii of nearby Miyajima; Sapporo, Hokkaido’s snow-festival city; Nagoya, a castle town and industrial hub in central Japan; Kanazawa, famous for one of Japan’s three great gardens and a preserved samurai district; Kobe, a port city known for its foreign settlement and mountain night views; Nagasaki, a historic trading port with a poignant peace park; Yokohama, Tokyo’s harbor neighbor and home to Japan’s largest Chinatown; Fukuoka, Kyushu’s gateway city; and Sendai, the “City of Trees” in the Tohoku region. Use this list to build an itinerary, or jump straight to the two attractions we’ve already covered in full, dedicated guides.

How This Ranking Was Made

This list is a curated ranking, not a live traffic or ticket-sales chart. We built it by weighing several public signals together: the depth and prominence of each attraction’s Wikipedia coverage, its general name recognition among international travelers and on major travel-review platforms, and whether it is actively promoted by Japan’s official tourism bodies (including JNTO, the Japan National Tourism Organization, and regional and municipal tourism boards). We combined these signals with editorial judgment about how iconic or representative each site is of its city. There is no single official visitor-count dataset covering all of these attractions consistently, so treat the exact order as a helpful starting point rather than a scientific measurement. This ranking reflects our research as of July 2026 and may be revised as new information becomes available.

FAQ

What is the single most-visited attraction in Japan?
Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto is generally considered Japan’s most iconic single attraction, thanks to its thousands of vermillion torii gates and free, 24-hour access. Tokyo’s Sensoji temple in Asakusa is a close second in name recognition.

How many days do I need to see the Top 15 on this list?
The Top 15 span four cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima). A realistic pace is 3-4 days in Tokyo, 3 days in Kyoto, 2 days in Osaka and a day trip to Hiroshima/Miyajima, so budget at least 10-12 days to cover them comfortably alongside travel time between cities.

Is this ranking based on official visitor statistics?
No. As explained above, there is no single consistent visitor-count dataset across all these sites, so this ranking combines Wikipedia coverage, general international name recognition and official tourism-board promotion rather than ticketed-entry numbers.

Do I need to book tickets in advance for these attractions?
Some, like teamLab Planets TOKYO and Universal Studios Japan, sell out and are best booked ahead. Most shrines, temples and public parks on this list are free or pay-on-arrival. Always check the attraction’s official site for current hours and admission before you go.
