Yeosu is Korea’s great coastal romance. Strung along the southern shore where hundreds of islands scatter across the sea, this port city trades big-city bustle for salt air, seafood, and one of the prettiest night views in the country. A hit K-pop song about a night in Yeosu turned it into a bucket-list name for young Koreans, and once you have seen the harbor lights shimmer off the water, you understand why.

It is also wonderfully compact and easy. The KTX runs straight from Seoul to Yeosu Expo Station in a little over three hours, dropping you within walking distance of the waterfront. Give it a full day and an overnight to catch the city after dark – here is how I would spend it.

Ride the Cable Car Over the Sea to Dolsan

Yeosu’s marine cable car glides right over the water between the mainland and Dolsan Island, and it is the single best way to grasp the city’s layout of bridges, harbors, and islands. Splurge on a crystal-floor cabin for the view straight down to the sea, and time your ride for sunset so you descend as the harbor lights flicker on. It is touristy, yes, but genuinely spectacular.

Walk to Hyangiram Hermitage at Dawn

On the far tip of Dolsan Island, the tiny Hyangiram hermitage clings to a seaside cliff, its shrines tucked between huge boulders and reached by squeezing through narrow rock passages. It is one of Korea’s most famous sunrise spots, with the sun rising straight out of the ocean below. Even in daylight the sea views and camellia-lined paths are worth the trip out.

Stroll the Romantic Night Sea and Jongpo Waterfront

The stretch of shoreline known as the “romantic night sea” is Yeosu’s beating heart after dark. Start along the Jongpo waterfront, where busker stages, seaside cafes, and food stalls line the promenade, then look across to the glowing Dolsan Bridge and the fishing boats bobbing in the harbor. Grab a hand-held snack, find a bench by the water, and simply soak up the atmosphere the whole city is named for.

Explore Odongdo Island

A short walk on a breakwater causeway connects the mainland to Odongdo, a small island blanketed in camellia trees and bamboo. Follow the wooded trails to the lighthouse lookout, ride the little “dongdongseom” train if your legs are tired, and enjoy sweeping views back over the harbor. In late winter and early spring the red camellia blooms make it especially lovely.

Wander the Expo Waterfront and Aqua Planet

Yeosu hosted a World Expo, and the revamped waterfront it left behind is now a breezy place to walk, with the Big-O show fountain, the sky tower, and the excellent Aqua Planet aquarium all in one spot. It is right by the KTX station and makes an easy first or last stop, especially good if you are traveling with kids.

Feast on Southern Coast Seafood

Yeosu is a food destination in its own right. This is the home of gchanggeo (grilled saltwater eel), spicy seasoned raw fish, fresh oysters and shellfish, and the region’s famous seasoned dried croaker. Head to the Gyodong traditional market or the seafood restaurants around the harbor and let the day’s catch decide your meal – it is some of the best coastal eating in Korea.

Take a Boat Tour Around the Islands

The waters off Yeosu are dotted with scenic islands, and the easiest way to see them is from the water. A guided harbor cruise or an island-hopping boat tour handles the timing and gets you out to viewpoints and fishing villages you cannot reach on foot, with the bridges and coastline as a backdrop.

Getting Around

Getting to Yeosu is simple – the KTX from Seoul reaches Yeosu Expo Station in just over three hours, and it sits right on the waterfront. In town, the Expo area, night sea, and cable car station are walkable, while local buses and taxis handle Dolsan Island, Hyangiram, and Odongdo. A T-money card works on the buses. One full day covers the waterfront and cable car; add an overnight to see the romantic night sea properly and chase the island sunrise the next morning.
